Framed Io Moths

The io moth (Automeris io) is a species of silk moth native to North America. As caterpillars, they have stinging spines which release a painful venom when touched. As adults, their wings feature spots that resemble eyes, which are used as a defence mechanism to startle predators.

This specimen is framed in a handmade wooden shadowbox.
